Doğa hep ilerlemeden yanadır. İnsan da dünya sahnesinde var olduğundan beri bir yandan sınırlarına meydan okurken diğer yandan kendisine sınırlar koymuş ve sonra da bu sınırları aşmak için sürekli çaba göstermek durumunda kalmıştır. Bu, insanın bir paradoksudur.
Kuşlar doğası gereği uçmayı öğrenir, kuşlar uçmayı deneye yanıla bir çabayla öğrense de uçmanın zor bir iş olduğu ve bunun için çok çabalaması gerektiği iç güdüsüyle hareket etmez. Ne var ki toplum, çocuğa çoğunlukla öğrenmenin zorlu çabalarla mümkün olabileceğini öğretir. Oysa öğrenmek, üstelik coşkulu bir merakla öğrenmek çocuğun doğal halidir, kuşun kanatlanarak uçması, tomurcuk bir gülün nihayetinde çiçek açıp hoş kokularını etrafına yayması gibi doğal bir haldir. Merakla keşfederek öğrenmek, çocuk için yaşamın kendisidir, sevinç halindeki bir zihin durumudur. Bu hal içten gelir ve gerçek öğrenme hali de budur. Zorlanarak öğrenmek ise gerçeklikten bağı kopuk bir hali resmeder gibidir.
Öğrenebilmek için çok çabalamak zorunda olduğuna inanan insan, bir yandan da başaracağına dair inancına sarılmak durumundadır. Oysaki toplumun genellikle “yapamazsın” “zordur” “imkansız” gibi olumsuz söylemlerine maruz kalmamış bir çocuğun öğrenmek için inanmaya ihtiyacı yoktur. Çünkü onun zihninde her şey berrak ve açıktır. Diğer yandan, o tamdır, biriciktir, bütündür. Uçmak nasıl ki bir kuşun doğal programıysa, çocuk için de öğrenmek öyledir.
Çocuk, toplumun olur olmaz sözleriyle zihni bulandırılıncaya dek yaşamının tek bir misyonu vardır: Sevinç içinde merakla öğrenerek var olmak. Ancak toplumun genellikle olumsuzluğa odaklanmış bakış açısı karşısında çocuğun bütünlüğü yavaşça bozulmaya başlar. Tekrarlanan sözler, giderek çocuğu kendisiyle ilgili gerçek olmayan imgelere hapseder ve onun ne olabilecekse o olmasını zorlaştırır.
Suggestopedia bakış açısıyla baktığımızda, çocuğun doğuştan berrak zihnini bulanıklaştıran olumsuz koşullandırmalar, ancak sevgi diliyle kurulan insancıl bir iletişimle son bulabilir. Sevgi dili, insanın görünen ve görünmeyen acılarını iyileştirebilir, ona tamlığını ve bütünlüğünü yeniden hatırlatabilir.
İçten sevgisiyle çocuk için huzurun ve güvenin kaynağı olabilen bir öğretmen/yetişkin, toplumun çocuğa açık ya da örtük ne tür zararlar verdiğinin farkındadır. Onun görevi, çocuğu her durum ve koşulda koruyup kollamaktır. Çocuğa özenle davranmak, her yetişkenin benimsemesi gereken etik bir duruştur. Gerçek bir öğretmen, çocuğun zihninde kendisiyle ilgili yanlış kanı ve inançlardan özgürleştirerek ona kendi gerçekliğine dair büyüme odaklı yeni bir perspektif sunar. Arındırılıp canlandırılmış zihin durumuyla kişi, hapsolduğu gerçek dışı imgelerin ötesinde kendi gerçekliğini görebilir ve böylece potansiyelini gerçekleştirmeye daha çok yakınlaşır. İşte tam da bu noktada Suggestopedia’nın amacı, daha iyi anlaşılır: İnsana bir çocuk zihninin tazeliğini ve berraklığını yeniden kazandırarak onun gizli ve şimdiye kadar açığa çıkarılmamış kapasitelerini açığa çıkarmak. Bu amacı gerçekleştirebilmek için Suggestopedia sınıflarının, beynimizin işleyişiyle olduğu kadar kalbimizle de uyumlu özgün bir doğası vardır.
Suggestopedia ruhuyla işlenen derslerin özgüllüğünü ve farklılığını nice satır ve sözle anlatmaya çalışsam, yine de kendimi bir öğretmenler gününde bir öğrencimin bana yazdığı şu sözlerinden daha iyi ifade edemeyebilirdim:

Benim için öyle özel, güzel ve umut dolusunuz ki… Sınıfta daima asılı duran pembe Suggestopedia gülünüz, What a Wonderful World’ler, sesiniz, sözünüz bir odayı, bir fakülteyi, kainatı, kalpleri aşan cümleleriniz. Herşey öyle içime işlemiş ki herhalde her biri için koca koca ciltleri haklarım…Sizi öyle çok seviyorum ki keşke sevgim kalbime ve bu dünyaya sığsa. Bugün öğretmenler günü ve ben öncelikle sizi, sonra gününüzü en içten dileklerimle kutluyorum. Gönül topraklarımız sizin suyunuzu özler, özlemle size kavuşmayı bekler.
Öğretmen, zihin yapısını, Suggestopedia’nın yedi yasası çerçevesinde biçimlendirmeye gönüllü olduğu sürece, olması gereken kendiliğinden olur. Suggestopedia, kalbin ve beynin besleyicisidir. Suggestopedia ilk olarak bir dil öğretim yöntemi olarak ortaya çıkmış olmakla birlikte evrensel sevgi ve şefkat dilini öğretmenin ve öğrenmenin en iyi yollarından biri olduğu da söylenebilir. Suggestopedia şefkat yoluyla bir devrimdir. Yeni dünyanın yeniliği, tüm yönlerin, tüm renklerin birliğidir. Suggestopedia, birlik ve beraberliğin bilimi ve sanatıdır!
Büyük Usta Dr. Lozanov’un yıllar önce Bulgaristan’da ektiği tohumlar, bugün kendi topraklarında ilk tomurcuklarını çoktan vermis bulunuyor. Işıltılı güzelliği ve zarafeti ile göz kamaştıran bu çiçek, bir gün tüm dünyada mis kokularıyla açmaya başlayacak ve Suggestopedia adını duymayan kalmayacak! Suggestopedia gül kokulu bir çiçektir! Onu koklayan öğretmen değişir, öğrenci değişir, okul değişir, tüm dünya değişir!

Some reflections concerning suggestopedia
Nature is progressive. Likewise, human beings have always been in pursuit of progress since their emergence on the stage of the world. However, on the one hand, while they have set limitations on their progress, on the other, they have constantly strived to exceed these limitations. This is the paradox of humankind.
Birds naturally learn to fly; given that birds learn to fly by trial and error, they do not act with the instinct that flying is a difficult job and that they have to work hard for it. Nevertheless, from an early age onwards, society often teaches us that learning which is inherent in every one of us is hard and it is merely possible through devoting serious conscious effort. However, learning with enthusiastic curiosity, let alone learning, is the natural state of every child. It is as natural as the bird flying with wings and it is as natural as the bud rose eventually blooming and spreading its adorable fragrances around. Learning with curiosity-driven exploration is life per se for the children; it is also a joyful state of mind. This state comes from within, and this is the state of authentic learning for all. Feeling bored with learning, on the other hand, depicts a state of detachment from reality. The one, believing that s/he has to work hard in order to learn, has to cling to the conviction that s/he will succeed in learning as well. Nevertheless, the child who has not been exposed to negative suggestions from the environment such as “you can’t”, “it is difficult”, “it is impossible” does not need to believe that he will learn, as at this young age, learning is still something natural and everything is crystal clear in the child’s mind. Moreover, the child feels a sense of completeness and wholeness. Just as flying is the bird’s innate program, so is learning for the child.
The child seems to have only one mission to fulfil in life, and it is to exist through learning with joyful curiosity. Most of the time, however, the adult is almost persistently inclined to dull the edge of this boundless curiosity. When our society’s outlook is attached to this, which is mainly focused on negativity, the integrity of the child starts to deteriorate slowly. Furthermore, repeated negative words or messages gradually becoming the child’s inner voice begin to imprison the child in unrealistic self-images, and this makes it difficult for the child to be what s/he could be. From the suggestopedic point of view, it is only possible to liberate from such negative messages that blur the clarity of the mind with purely humanitarian communication. Only the language of affection can heal the visible and invisible sufferings of the humankind and reminds them that they are whole and unique. The adults, who can be a source of serenity and trust for the children with their sincere love, are always attentive to them no matter what the circumstances. This is also the ethical stance to which every adult should be adhered.
In an attempt to make the learners free from the misconceptions and beliefs about themselves that are limited, an authentic teacher offers them a wide variety of choices that can bring about a new growth mindset regarding their own reality. With a purified and reinvigorated state of mind, one can see what is beyond the unreal images of the self and thus get closer to realizing the true potential within. It is at this point that the purpose of Suggestopedic education becomes apparent: to actualize the latent and hitherto unrevealed capacities through reminding the individual of the freshness and of the clearness of a child’s mind. In order to attain this, Suggestopedia classes have a unique nature that is compatible with the heart as well as the functioning of the brain.
If I could write many lines and articulate many words about how the classes taught through the spirit of Suggestopedia are unique and genuine, I might not be able to express myself better than these words written to me on a teacher’s day by a student of mine from the university I have been working for years:
“My dear teacher,
When I started to come out of my childhood, when I felt everything so deeply and walked around in grief and anxiety, when all the glasses were shattered inside me and I was stepping on them harder, you were the one who lit a match in the darkness and suggested uniting all those pieces one by one. That’s why, whenever I would like to write to you, I both take a deep sigh and feel the strength that is in me now…You are so special, wonderful and full of hope for me. Your pink Suggestopedia rose always hanging in the classroom, the songs we listened to -What a Wonderful Worlds-, your voice, your words and your sentences that go beyond the room, the faculty building, the universe, and the hearts. Everything you said is so ingrained in me, yet I would probably devour a high volume of books If I could write a word for each of them. I love you so much and I wish my love could fit in my heart and this world. Today is the teacher’s day and I would like to congratulate you first and then your day with my sincere wishes. The soil of our hearts yearning for your water and yearning for our reunion.”
As long as the teacher is willing to carve out the existing mindset within the framework of the seven laws of Suggestopedia, the teacher experiences that “extraordinary” can happen. Anyone with the dedication to appreciate the essence of Suggestopedia soon comes to realize that the teacher per se is the system of education. Undoubtedly, classical music, songs, dance, arts, drama, gamification, stories, rich instructional materials and the presentation of the rich content specific to Suggestopedia are of utmost significance in this unique system of teaching and learning, yet there are some sound reasons to argue that it is the mindset of the teacher that gives life and direction to all of these. The more skilfully the mindset of the teacher is embroidered with love and plasticized with conviction, the more the teacher can attain better outcomes. Love, being the gist and the first sine qua non law of Suggestopedia, is the driving force of the teacher and on the condition that the teacher perpetually chooses to be nourished by love, not only the progress but also the transformation becomes inevitable.
My work in the area of Suggestopedia has taught me that Suggestopedia is a form of heart-to-heart communication, it is the joy of living. It is an exciting adventure that one does not want it come to an end. Suggestopedia is the nurturer of our heart and brain. Literally speaking, Suggestopedia first emerged as the language teaching methodology, yet metaphorically speaking, it appears that it is also the best way of teaching and learning the universal language of love and compassion. Suggestopedia is the revolution through compassion. A novelty of the new world, the union of all directions, of all colours. Suggestopedia is the science and art of oneness and unification!
The seeds that Dr. Lozanov planted years ago in Bulgaria have already started to bud in his soil today. The flower, called Suggestopedia, standing for its radiant beauty and sophistication will soon start to bloom perennially all over the world. Without a shadow of a doubt, once this rare beauty is smelt, the teacher, the learner, the school and the whole world will change for the better continually.
